El Vapor De Brooklyn

August 18, 2025

8:00p

Barbès
376 9th Street

Brooklyn, NY
El Vapor de Brooklyn is born out of the NYC Boricua diáspora. Much like their antecessors and inspirations Los Pleneros de la 21 and Viento de Agua, VdB is intent on keeping and furthering Puerto Rican music, particularly through the diasporic lens. The Brooklyn-based octet, comprised of Puerto Rican (some, members of LP21), Latinx, and American musicians, takes an unconventional approach to plena and bomba, with influences from jazz, contemporary music, timba, r&b, and reggaeton - much in the spirit of Rafael Cortijo more than 60 years ago while based in this same City. With a foot in PR and another in NYC, VdB brings a fresh influenced take on the genres while keeping true to their original spirit of carrying on the stories of those who practice them at their time and place. These are our stories, today. And this is what they sound like.

Playing flute/ saxophone with these folks!!!

Slavic Soul Party! (Brattleboro, VT)

October 11, 2025

8:00p

Stone Church
210 Main St
Brattleboro, VT
05301
Fiery Balkan brass, irresistible beats, Roma (Gypsy) accordion wizardry, and virtuoso jazz chops make Slavic Soul Party! NYC’s official #1 brass band for BalkanSoul GypsyFunk.  These nine musicians pump the sounds of New York life through a Balkan brass filter, making new music out of immigration, integration, and ingenuity.  The band's Tuesday night residency at Barbès in Brooklyn, going for over 22 years, has become a destination for music fans from around the world, and is famous for "delivering a great time." (New York Times)  In November 2024 SSP! released their seventh album, a collection of original material titled “Extended Play” on the Diskonife label.

"Anytime musicians study traditions deeply, and then free themselves to follow their own whims, it's a beautiful thing. But when it comes to the brass band fusion of Slavic Soul Party! that's just the beginning.  With razor-sharp precision, juggernaut force, and a healthy dose of playfulness, these guys start out in overdrive and never let up... Slavic Soul Party! offers a gutpunch to preconceptions about traditional music, world music, pop music, dance music, but I'll tell you, this is one gutpunch you'll enjoy." (Banning Eyre, NPR's All Things Considered)

Fondation Beyeler
Baselstrasse 101

Switzerland

Inspired by a small mimicry bird, which is said to have the largest song repertoire in the world, and deeply rooted in the musical traditions of the African diaspora - especially in the folkloric and popular music of the Caribbean and Cuba - Zink Yi embarks on an experimental composition process together with collaborating musicians. The imitation of nature becomes the core of artistic expression. As in his earlier projects, Zink Yi opens up spaces for transformation and reinvention and questions common concepts of belonging.

David Leon: Solo

April 8, 2025

8:00p

Roulette Intermedium
509 Atlantic Ave
Brooklyn, NY
Presenting new work as part of my 2024/25 Jerome Artist Residency

David Leon, alto saxophone & modular synthesizers

Roulette 2024 Resident David Leon presents new solo music for saxophone and modular synthesizers. Describing his approach as “surreal ASMR”, Leon constructs a piece around the quiet extreme of his saxophone. Inspired by the spacious environments of ambient electronic music and field recordings as much as the visceral performances of New York’s downtown improvisors and Miami’s noise artists, Leon’s solo create spaces that feel immediate, concrete and physical.
